The Australian Department of Immigration has defended its decision to transfer one seriously injured asylum seeker from Christmas Island to Perth using a 737 aircraft.
The patient was believed to be on the asylum seeker boat which sank last week off the coast of Christmas Island.
He was transported in the aircraft, capable of seating 130 passengers, by himself to Perth on Friday evening for medical treatment after reportedly losing two fingers.
A spokesman for the immigration department told ninemsn the aircraft was owned by the department and used for immigration purposes regularly.
“The aircraft used in the medical evacuation is a resource of the Department of Immigration and is used as part of normal operations, transporting clients and support staff for the detention network,” the spokesman said.
“The provision was taken to use the aircraft as it was already on standby and due to fly back to Perth in a matter of days anyway.”
The Immigration Department said it would have been more costly to have the Royal Flying Doctor Service return to transport the man.
“(The patient’s) medical condition was serious enough that it warranted immediate transfer.”
Three other passengers were flown by the Royal Flying Doctor Service to Perth for treatment earlier on Friday.
It is believed around 90 other passengers are dead or unaccounted for following the boat accident.

They get treated better then us kiwis - If my business folds or I get sick I cant get any help from center link.
You Aussies hand them everything on a silver platter.
I should go out on my kayak as say I'm a asylum seeker then get everything giving to me.
how much is it costing you Aussie's - this is why your taxes go up.
Why isn't the government helping out your own poor and homeless, why not house the homeless on christmas island or put them in motels like they do these asylum seekers. Like someone said as soon as the hit dry land put them on a plane and send them back home.
Come on Aussies open your eyes and say enough is a enough

Another 100 odd got picked up today. Give it a year and there will be more Asylum seekers here then kiwis At lest the kiwis support our country and work.
Why don't we just give the Asylum seekers Christmas island and let then fend for them self - they can use their boat to fish from.
Why should the government care about them when they cant even care for us - who comes 1st them or us.
Next the government will be sending the p&o ships over so they have a safe boat to travel in.

we open the other center and all we say to these boat people is to keep coming over as we have more room to house you and your family. They get housed, feed, all meds and not have to pay a power bill, rent and so on. Who is better off us Aussies or them - I know I'm finding it hard to pay bills and buy food for my family even know my husband and I work very hard for what we have. I have a tooth that needs to come out but we haven't got the $250 odd dollars - MISS PM I'm a real Aussie will you help me or do i have to be asylum seeker to get free treatment It makes you think - we have homeless, people are finding it hard to by food and pay the increasing power bills. How about we help our own first. Like one person said on here the only way to stop them coming is to put them on a plane and send them back the next day. We stop people coming into Australia every day at the airports and sent them back home on a plane so whats the driffents. CAN WE CLAIM ASYLUM IN OUR OWN COUNTRY WHAT DO THE REST OF AUSTRALIA THINK

So Gillard is now going to let asylum seeker families into the community to live - will they be living next to you. They will be getting 85% of new start allowance, housed and be left to do as they pleased.
Now that they know they will get to live in the community and not in camp your going to get even more boats coming over.
They will be running out of boats soon so if you have one for sale - put a ad in their paper.

No boat people will be resettled in Australia
That's easy to say but at what cost will it be on us little people as PNG would want to line their pockets with silver. PNG will have Australia by the balls and would able to blackmail Australia in getting anything they want. Wouldn't it be cheaper to just put them on a plane and send them back to were they got on the boat - as soon as PNG packs the shits with Australia they will just ship them back here so at some point its not going to work out to be a long term answer. They will still come as no matter were they go as they know at they will be still better off - ill go and live in PNG knowing I will get housed, feed and a benefit and not needing to work for the rest of my life. What do the rest of you guys say
