A Sydney family trying to raise money for their daughter who suffers leukemia is devastated after $18,000 raised at a charity dinner was allegedly stolen by the organiser.
The parents of 21-month-old Alyssa Miller contacted police seven weeks ago after failing to receive the funds from the benefit night, which was held in Campbelltown, in Sydney's south-west, last November.
Police have charged a 36-year-old woman from Bradbury with dishonestly obtaining financial advantage by deception and she is due to appear in Campbelltown court on August 10.
Alyssa's mother Amanda told Nine News she was touched when the woman offered to organise a dinner to raise money for their daughter.
"I just thought, 'Wow this is excellent, I'm not going to lose everything'," Mrs Miller said.
"My daughter's fighting for her life, [but] I'm going to keep the house."
Father Scott Miller said they were shocked when the woman, who cannot be named for legal reasons, never handed over the money.
"How can somebody have no heart … she's only a baby," he said.
Mrs Miller said she and her husband were having to ask for financial help all over again.
The Miller family is currently relying on charity from the Leukemia Foundation to pay for their daughter's medical bills and help them out with essentials such as food.
