To be honest, it really depends on how big your backyard is and what sorts of obstacles you have to go around. If you have a lot of garden beds, rocks, children's play equipment and so on you should go for a zero-turn mower because it will enable you to manoeuvre around them easily. If your backyard is pretty square in shape and doesn't have many obstacles, a standard ride-on mower will be fine.
As for brands and sizes, for a first mower I would probably recommend a known brand (like Husqvarna or Honda) because there is a lot more support around for this sorts of models. Also, these brands are trusted, so it is less likely that you will be dissatisfied with the decision, even if you do have to spend a little more money in the beginning. The size that you choose should correspond to the size of your backyard - a sales rep should be able to help you work this out.
