Word of mouth Doing a top job and customer satisfaction is important I have a saying if there is a problem let me know if you are happy with our service tell others.
Printing and delivering your own flyers is time well spent you can be selective and deliver to houses that look like they could use your service or jobs that you wwould like to do or just canvas whole areas
Have cards handy at al times even at dinner parties, pubs shops everywhere you go you never know when you will meet someone who may use your service

There's no point in being poncy when it comes to advertising. I've heard all the old gems over the years, like contractors who advertise in papers only get the jobs others don't want... the best customers are referrals... and I don't need to advertise because I'm so good that my customers talk about me to all their friends all the time! Its all BULL. Follow the practices of every successful business in the world, and ADVERTISE. If you need work, you need to grow, you need to improve your existing clientele, then advertise! Be it in the newspaper, flyers, radio or whatever else floats your boat or gets the job done. If you can't design your own ads or flyers or website, then get it done for you. And get into it fast, the longer you wait, the longer you go without income. Every successful business in the world advertises. Do the same! Just my humble opinion, take it or leave it

I'm getting things ready now for next spring. All I've done is upgrade my signs on my ute and trailer ($700) This past year I didn't spend any money on advertising and I got more then enough work as I even passed work on to others.
If you do a good job the word will get around about you.
All my advertising is 3 things Vehicle signs Website Good old honest work ethics (I'm there for my clients - without them i wouldn't have a business)
We have a saying back home in New Zealand - Yes I'm a Kiwi and proud of who I am. Don't bite the hand that feeds you.

Agreed Abra about Vehicle signage - just had mine done and its getting me work off the street. Do it professionally and it speaks worlds about you and your business. Plenty of blokes in the handyman/mowing trades who come and go and leave a bad impression. If you look the part, customers aren't worried you're going to disappear on them or do a dodgy job.

Always carry business cards on you as you never know when you need to hand them out

I've found if you drop a couple of business cards in surrounding letterboxes when you do a job at a house it can work too. Neighbours sometimes don't chat to each other but this has worked a couple of times for me.
